Mountain biking in Scotland at its best, Torridon and Skye

This magnificent mountain biking experience in Scotland should be on every mountain bike enthusiast’s bucket list, and comes on recommendation from Scotland’s own trials star Danny MacAskill, who rode with us in Torridon and Skye in 2010 (watch the video) and listed this tour as his ‘Must-do Trip’.

Danny says of the jagged peaks that pierce the skyline in this part of Scotland’s west coast:

“They’re like mini-Alps, with a really bare, rugged, lunar-like landscape full of amazing mountain biking trails.”

If the best mountain biking in Scotland is on your bucket list for 2013, join us on one of our three scheduled mountain bike tours in Torridon and Skye next year and find out what all the fuss is about!

Key mountain bike skills part 3: how to bunny-hop

In the final part of our key mountain bike skills series, we’ve put together a short video to show you how to bunny-hop, which combines both the front wheel lift and the rear wheel lift that we covered previously. The bunny-hop is one of the most useful mountain biking skills to master, and we hope that by watching our video and putting in plenty of practice in the saddle, you’ll soon be bunny-hopping like a pro!

The bunny-hop is a mountain bike skill that you’ll find invaluable on almost all of our mountain bike adventures around the world, and our guides will be more than happy to give you some on-the-trail tuition, should you need a few more pointers.

Well, don’t just sit there… get out and practise your mountain bike skills!

Top 5 kit items in our bike packs

Guide and bike pause to take in the view of the Himalayas

What's in our back packs?

Packing the right gear into your back pack is an essential, if not life-saving, part of mountain biking, so we thought we’d share the top 5 pieces of kit in our bike packs.

Our clients often stand wide-eyed watching our guides pulling kit out of their bike packs, but it’s crucial that they’re prepared for every eventuality when they’re out with you, riding trails in some very remote parts of the world. Over the years our guides have honed their skills in packing only the most useful, and multi-functional kit into their rucksacks, since attaching a horse box to the back of their bikes isn’t an option! First-aid, maps, inner tubes, etc., come as standard, but what else do our mountain bike guides carry in their bulging bike packs?

Here are our guides’ top 5 pieces of kit, including some interesting, do-it-all items that you may not have thought of!

Euan, H&I Adventures owner

  • Duct tape – fixes just about anything!
  • Cable/ zip ties – these little gems will fix burst riding bags, tie broken spokes out of the way, tame errant cables…
  • Mini track pump – forget those tiny hand pumps that take 25 minutes to inflate a tyre; a mini track pump is much more effective and will have you on your way again in no time
  • Camera – you’re riding through some of the world’s most beautiful areas, and perhaps just the once, so collect those memories!
  • Spare food – going hungry is not an option

Mandil, mountain bike guide Nepal

  • Spare contact lenses
  • iPhone – for taking pictures and emergency phone calls
  • Head lamp – just in case we’re out for longer than anticipated
  • Money clip and ID – always handy to carry these with you in Nepal
  • Trail mix – essential energy food to keep you going all day in the saddle
Peanuts and raisins, the perfect trail mix

Peanuts and raisins, Alex's top trail food

Alex, mountain bike guide Scotland

  • Re-usable bag with peanuts and raisins – a bag is better than a tub because it takes up less precious space in my already-full pack
  • CO2 inflation cartridges – a racer’s trick for super-fast puncture repair if you’re desperate!
  • TORQ single-measure canisters – normally I just drink water, which can be replenished from the Highland streams, but these little canisters carry enough powder for one energy drink and can come in handy if someone needs a quick boost
  • Plastic bag for carrying rubbish out from the trails, particularly banana skins, which you don’t want lying around in your bag next to other kit!
  • Rab Generator vest – it packs down to nothing, weighs next to nothing and provides superb core body insulation

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list of the gear we take on a bike ride, and if you come on one of our worldwide mountain bike adventures, you’ll see for yourself the Pandora’s Box of surprises hidden inside our rucksacks! But you should, hopefully, glean some small sparks of inspiration to help you pack your bike kit in super-efficient style!

Guided vs self-guided mountain bike tours – what’s best?

There are many arguments for and against both self-guided and guided mountain bike tours, however, we strongly believe that a fully-guided mountain bike trip – in any destination – is the only way to ensure you get the best, safest experience, and most value for money from your adventure tour. And in this blog post we aim to demonstrate this and convince you that guided is the way to go!

Preparation and planning

Time is precious to all of us, and planning a mountain bike adventure is no small undertaking. There are many different aspects to consider, not just the mountain biking routes. You’ll find yourself spending endless hours on the internet, researching accommodation, transport, places to eat, trails, weather, costs…you haven’t even left the house and you’ve already lost hours of your life plugged-in to some technology or other to figure out how you’re going to spend your spare time.

We’ve done all this research, and tried and tested the whole package for you, so why not take advantage of our expertise and local knowledge and leave the hard work to us?

But I like researching and planning myself…

Okay, so you like to take control of the planning process yourself, and take pleasure in creating your own mountain bike holidays for you and your friends/family. How do you know that what you’ve planned is the best itinerary, with the best accommodation and restaurants in the area? Can you be sure that your mountain bike adventure will live up to your friends’ expectations and deliver everything that they had hoped – and paid – for?

Delivering the experience

An incredible mountain bike tour isn’t about any one element of the trip, it’s about the whole package, and we work with local guides and fixers in every destination to ensure that the whole adventure lives up to, if not exceeds, your expectations.

Good food mountain biking in Scotland

Enjoying great food in a small local restaurant, Scotland

We know what makes a good mountain bike tour absolutely fantastic, and it’s the combination of: excellent trails; delicious local food; beautiful scenery; friendly and welcoming accommodation; local culture and people; and experienced, knowledgeable guides who are prepared for every eventuality.

All of these details have been finalised well in advance of your arrival, and will seem seamless to you when on tour, but a lot of work has gone in to producing the finished article.

But navigation is part of the fun for us…

We appreciate that some people really enjoy navigating their own way along the route, and perhaps we’ll never convince those people that having a guide is a better experience, but in some areas a small mistake in map reading can lead to an extremely long detour in the wrong direction. Tension builds and patience is tried, and when you finally end up in the not-as-nice-as-we-thought accommodation, no one is speaking and the mood of the group has deteriorated considerably.

Added value

Would having your own personal skills teacher on hand, or a local person who can tell you about the geology, flora and fauna, or even accommodation and food stops planned in for just when you need them, help to turn your holiday into an amazing mountain biking experience?

Mountain biking high in the cloud forest of Oaxaca, Mexico

Mountain biking the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico

We will be on hand during each of our tours to offer just this kind of information and tuition to help you understand more about the country you are experiencing, and to improve as a mountain biker.

TripAdvisor can go some way to helping you choose good accommodation and eating places, but you can spend a lot of time sifting through recommendations and often end up feeling more confused than when you started. You also won’t know if an establishment has changed ownership recently and suddenly gone downhill, or if the location really is what you were looking for. We have spent a lot of time building up strong relationships with local accommodation and food providers for our trips, and in some cases this rapport allows us to offer you special meals for your group in small restaurants that don’t otherwise open for dinner.

With a local guide you’re more likely to have those special experiences that your average tourist misses out on. Like getting up before dawn and riding by the light of a headlamp to a spectacular spot for watching the sun rise over the cloud forests of Oaxaca, Mexico.

When things don’t go according to plan

The real value of a guided mountain bike tour is demonstrated best when things don’t go exactly as planned. When the weather takes a turn for the worst and a ride you thought would take five hours actually takes more like nine. You don’t have enough food or energy left in the tank and you don’t know any shortcuts. An experienced mountain bike guide will be able to guage the weather, trail conditions, group mood, and will alter the route if necessary to make sure that your day in the saddle is the best it can be.

Fixing a mechanical, mountain biking in Nepal

Creating a spectacle, fixing a puncture in Nepal

If you have chosen the self-supported option, do you know the risks and are you prepared for them? Do you know where the phone reception cuts out? Where medical attention can be sought? What the weather has been like over the past couple of weeks? Do you have sufficient emergency equipment for the terrain you are traveling in?

Your safety is our number one priority, and we believe that our local guides, who live all year round in each location, are best-placed to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience on our mountain bike tours.

We hope to have convinced you that a professionally guided mountain bike tour is the best option for ensuring a truly oustanding adventure experience, but if you’re still not sure you can read some of our customer reviews and meet your mountain bike guides before making your decision.

Coast-to-coast Scotland – what are the costs?

We’re often asked about the cost of our mountain bike tours in Scotland, specifically the coast-to-coast, which some regard as being quite expensive. So we thought we would explain the processes and costs involved in running a tour like the coast-to-coast to show you that you are getting good value for money as well as an exceptional mountain biking experience in Scotland.

Logistics

Fast boat across Loch Broom

Coast-to-coast day two, fast boat across Loch Broom

Logistically, the coast-to-coast Scotland is a fairly complex trip, with you and your guide taking one route from east to west by bike, and your luggage going by road with your driver and support vehicle to your next overnight accommodation. Your driver is also a qualified and experienced mountain bike guide and he will join the group from the opposite end after seeing your luggage safely to the accommodation, which gives the option of splitting the group in two so that everyone can ride at their own pace and not feel pressurised to speed up or slow down.

On day two of our coast-to-coast adventure we take a fast boat (RIB) from our overnight stop in Ullapool, across Loch Broom, to the start of the next stage of our journey. This makes for a much more exciting route than following the road to pick up the next piece of the trail west, and is included in the cost of the trip.

Accommodation
We know that, after a long day in the saddle all you want is a warm welcome, nice hot shower and comfortable bed, so we use the best, family-run accommodation in each of the villages we stop in along the coast-to-coast route. We don’t use hostels or bunk houses because we feel that everyone deserves a little more comfort on this mountain bike adventure in Scotland, so we use 3- and 4-star B&Bs, small hotels, and guest houses whose standards of service match our – and your – high expectations.

Meals

Happy coast-to-coasters celebrating at Applecross Inn

Happy coast-to-coasters celebrating at The Applecross Inn

Another important aspect of the accommodation we choose is the quality of their breakfast! A good, hearty breakfast will set you up for your day in the saddle, and all breakfasts are included in the cost of the tour.

Each day we will either pick up our own provisions for packed-lunches in the local shop before we leave, or we will put in our requests and our driver will stop at a shop on his way, then meet us at our designated lunch stop on the trails. In the evening we will have dinner in a local restaurant, café or pub where, again, everyone can choose exactly what they want to eat and drink. We feel this is the most transparent way for everyone to choose and pay for their own meals each day on our point-to-point mountain bike adventure.

Our coast-to-coast Scotland culminates at the Applecross Inn, voted Scotland’s Pub of the Year 2012, where you will enjoy some of the best local ales, whiskies, and world-class seafood, and celebrate your success in completing our coast-to-coast adventure!

Transfers
Our coast-to-coast Scotland tour starts and ends in Inverness, and included in the price of the trip is a transfer from Inverness to the start of the route, about two hours to the north-east, and then back to Inverness at the end of the tour. We have mini-buses for passengers and your bike will be transported in a specially-modified trailer at each end of the coast-to-coast tour.

We hope this demonstrates that, at £915/ $1,550USD per person, our coast-to-coast mountain bike tour in Scotland delivers an unforgettable adventure experience in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. We have dates from May to September each year and we look forward to welcoming you on our incredible coast-to-coast Scotland tour soon!

Cotopaxi, Ecuador, the world's highest active volcano

Mountain biking on Cotopaxi, Ecuador

On this incredible, ten-day guided mountain bike trip you’ll experience some epic mountain bike trails, including the 1,300m descent at Mamarumi, one of the most amazing downhill trails in Ecuador that weaves through the thick cover of rain forests and banana plantations, and was once the clandestine trading route of liquor smugglers.

You’ll also tackle the slopes of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world, and attempt to tame this dragon whose flanks are covered with petrified lava, volcanic ash, boulders and sand.

Off the bike, there’s the chance to experience some of the colourful culture for which Ecuador is famous, with a visit to Otavolo market, horse riding at a traditional working hacienda (ranch), and time to explore Quito, the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Site.

The first of these South American mountain bike adventures rolls out from 1st to 11th December and costs from £1,550/ $2,480 USD per person (ex. flights), which includes all guiding, ground transport, accommodation, most meals, and entrance fees to national parks.
